If Newsvine has taught us anything over the last few months, it's this: we like to argue. We like debating in the comments, but we want more! We want to see new and seasoned viners duke it out, and we want to challenge our foes in keyboard-to-keyboard combat. So we established a new home for debate on Newsvine. We call it Tangle.

Q: What can we do with Tangle?

A: Tangle gives viners a space to go head-to-head with each other. We'll pit liberals against conservatives, hawks against doves, Alien against Predator -- and everyone can watch the sparks fly.

Q: Who can tangle?

A: For now the current Tangle administrators will invite panelists based on the strength of their posts. You can also contact Tangle to ask for an invite.

Q: Can we participate even if we're not debating?

A: Yes. Comments will still be allowed, and a moderator can take
questions from the audience.

Q: On what subjects will we tangle?

A: The first subject will be Mykola's: what has Bush done wrong, and what has he done right? After that, we're taking suggestions.

Q: Will Tangle always be textbased?

A: Maybe not. We're hoping to put together a podcast and incorporate real-time chat. Soon Tangle will rule all media!

Come Tangle with us!

Looks great, Mykola and company. I can't wait until the debates start rollin'.

Can't freakin' wait. Vinay would have to disappear this weekend, wouldn't he?

I'm looking forward to some epic Tangles (nice name by the way). What/who decides when the tangle is done or won?

Same as Calvin, I am quite looking forward to getting Tangled up, once I get back from vacation. All 4 of you are great authors who hold great visions for Newsvine and I couldn't pick better people to take charge of an operation such as this.

Everyone should give these individuals a round of applause for taking the initiative to set this up.

Thanks for the headsup, Calvin. That'll show me to just type in URLs instead of copy-pasting.

Guess a Tangle is not as smart as it looks.

Mad props to theannalog for giving wings to this whole idea. She came up with the name "Tangle," if I'm not mistaken, and if not for her work I'm not sure what I'd do with the raving masses who want to debate Bush ;)

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. We hope to surprise and impress you with the things we plan to do with this baby.

So is newsvine getting user blacklists at some point? I'm thinking that the popularity of this effort will result in you guys hitting the front page daily. I, for one, want nothing to do with it; no interest in politics at all.

fastfinge, soon we'll be allowing you to sort and choose which modules you want on the front page. So, if you don't want the politics module, you won't have to see it. But, if someone writes a post on politics and is a featured writer on the front page, you'll have to skip over it (which is our policy in general: vote for what you like; skip over what you don't like).

I have to say that when I read my morning paper, I skip the sports section. Imagine what I do with sports in newsvine!

I think that's left up to the users. There will be those who will be unconvinced of the opposing side, even if one side has clearly provided a better argument. In other cases, it will be too close to call. Either way, I think this is an opportunity to debate intelligently in a structured manner. And much like some debate competitions that I have attended in the past, even if there is no clear winner of the debate, the strength of the debater in using facts, etc can determine a winner of that competition. The difference here, is that it is not a competition. We're focusing on the debate itself, and I think that is an important distinction.
